How to Tell if Your Dryer Vent Needs Cleaning
Six warning signs your dryer vent is clogged, why it matters (fire risk), and how often Western PA homes really need it cleaned.
01
Clogged dryer vents cause an estimated 15,000+ U.S. house fires every year. The vast majority of homes we inspect in Westmoreland County are overdue for a cleaning by years, not months. Here's how to tell where yours stands.
Six warning signs
- Clothes take more than one cycle to dry. The single most common symptom. If a normal load needs 70+ minutes, the vent is restricted.
- The dryer or laundry room is hot to the touch. Heat that should be exhausting outside is staying inside.
- Burning smell during a cycle. Lint trapped in the vent or against the heating element is starting to scorch. Stop using it.
- Outside vent flap doesn't open fully during a cycle. Check while a load is running — the flap should push open with steady airflow.
- Lint visible around the dryer hookup or outside vent. Means lint is escaping the system at junctions.
- It's been more than 2 years since the last cleaning. Or you've never had it done.
Why this actually matters
A restricted vent forces the dryer to run hotter and longer to dry the same load. That stresses the heating element (a $200–$400 replacement) and creates fire risk. Lint is highly flammable, and when it accumulates against a heating element, the result is exactly what you'd expect.
How often it needs done
- Annually for most households
- Every 6 months if you have pets that shed or do 8+ loads a week
- Every 6 months if your vent run is over 25 feet or has more than two 90° bends
What a real cleaning involves
Not just emptying the lint trap. A real vent cleaning means disconnecting the dryer, running a rotary brush through the full length of the vent line from inside to outside, vacuuming the lint trap housing, and verifying full airflow at the exterior cap. Takes 45–75 minutes for most homes and runs $120–$200 in our area.
Common Questions
01Can I clean the dryer vent myself?+
Short vent runs (under 10 feet, straight shot) are reasonable DIY with a brush kit from a hardware store. Long runs with bends, or vents that exit through the roof, are worth having done by someone with proper equipment.
02Do you clean dryer vents as a standalone service?+
Yes, and it's also included annually in our Maintenance Membership along with gutter cleaning and a seasonal walk-through.
