Best Time of Year to Start a Remodel in Pennsylvania

When to schedule a Western Pennsylvania remodel for the best pricing, fastest scheduling, and least weather risk — month by month.

February 18, 20264 min read

Every contractor we know in Western PA is slammed from May through October and quieter from January through March. That seasonal swing affects what you pay, how fast you can get on a schedule, and how cleanly the project runs.

Best windows by project type

  • Interior remodels (kitchens, baths, basements): January–March is the sweet spot. Schedules are open, lead times on materials are shorter, and contractors are often more flexible on pricing.
  • Additions and exteriors: April–June is ideal. Frame and dry in before peak summer heat, finish exterior work before fall rains.
  • Decks and outdoor: Early spring (March–April) for use that summer, or late fall (October–November) at often 5–10% better pricing for use the following spring.
  • Roofing: Late spring or early fall. Avoid mid-summer heat (shingles tear easily) and avoid winter cold (sealant doesn't bond).
  • Concrete (driveways, patios, foundations): May–September. Anything outside that window risks freeze damage to fresh concrete.

What January–March remodels actually look like

Interior remodels in deep winter are great for homeowners. We're in your house anyway — weather doesn't matter. Material lead times are shorter because suppliers are slower. Pricing on labor is often slightly better because we'd rather book the work than have empty weeks. The one downside: cabinet manufacturers don't speed up just because contractors are slower, so the long-lead items still take 6–10 weeks.

Why summer is the worst time to ask for a quick remodel quote

From May through August, most reputable Western PA contractors are booked 8–14 weeks out. Anyone who can start your kitchen "next week" in June is usually someone you don't want starting your kitchen. The contractors with capacity in summer are typically the newest or the ones nobody calls back.

When to call

For a summer project: call in February or March. For a fall project: call in May. For a winter interior project: call in October. Lead time for the conversation, design, permits, and material order is usually 6–12 weeks before we can break ground.

Common Questions

01Do you charge less for off-season work?+

We don't have published "off-season" pricing, but our quotes for January–March interior work tend to come in slightly more competitive because labor scheduling is easier. The bigger savings are usually in not paying rush fees on materials.

02Can you really work in our house in February?+

Yes — interior work is unaffected by weather. The crew tracks in less mud, plastic containment seals better in dry winter air, and you have your project done before the summer entertaining season.
